What are Patient support programs?

EMA GVP VI states "A patient support programme is an organised system where a marketing authorisation holder receives and collects information relating to the use of its medicinal products. Examples are post-authorisation patient support and disease management programmes, surveys of patients and healthcare professionals, information gathering on patient compliance, or compensation/reimbursement schemes."

Patient Assistance Programme is the provision of a service or financial assistance or reimbursement support for patients

Most of the patient support programmes (PSP) fall into one of three categories with the following objectives:

1. Supporting patients and help them take their medications as prescribed (compliance/adherence)
2. Helping patients understand their condition and provide advice on managing disease e.g. lifestyle (exercise or diet), disease education
3. Provision of a service or financial assistance or reimbursement support for patients
